National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) says it will partner with Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in its quest to rid the country of fake number plates.
President of NYCN, Sara-Igbe Sukubo, stated this when he led a delegation of the council to the FRSC national headquarters on Thursday in Abuja.
Sukubo, while stressing the importance of contributing to the country’s safety and security, noted that fake number plates posed a significant threat to road safety.
He said that the partnership with FRSC would promote road safety, enhance inter-agency collaboration and foster a culture of responsibility among Nigerian youths.
“As young leaders, the council recognises the importance of contributing to the safety and security of the nation, hence the urgency of the need for this partnership and support.
“NYCN is committed to working with FRSC to educate its members and the general public on the dangers of fake number plates.
“We are also committed to sensitising them on the importance of obtaining genuine ones through authorised channels,” he said.
The NYCN president declared the willingness of his office to engage in joint enforcement with the corps to get rid of the menace.
Responding, the FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, applauded the NYCN’s willingness to contribute to nation-building through advocacy and sensitisation.
Mohammed, represented by the Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) in charge of Operations, Mr Hyginus Omeje, said that FRSC had been at the forefront of campaign against fake number plates.
“The partnership with NYCN is expected to amplify the corps’ efforts,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the corps had, since the beginning of the year, commenced enforcement against proliferation of fake number plates across the country.
NAN also reports that the exercise had led to no fewer than 400 vehicles being impounded for contravention.
