The Nigerian Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered that all officers assigned as Aide-De-Camp (ADC) to Executive Governors must not hold a rank higher than Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).
The directive, which is to be implemented immediately, was outlined in a Police Wireless Message dated March 10, 2025. It was addressed to all Commands, Units, and Departments and signed by the Force Secretary.
Titled: “CB:4001/FS/FHQ/ABJ/V.12/421 Order and Directives,” the police authorities have expressed regret that Aide-De-Camps (ADCs) assigned to governors continue to hold their positions even after being promoted beyond the designated rank for such assignments.
The directive instructs all police departments, units, and commands to ensure strict compliance, emphasizing that it should be treated with utmost importance.
The wireless message, obtained on Thursday, states: “INGENPOL (Inspector General of Police) has observed with dismay that aide-de-camp (ADC) deployed to governors still maintain their duty post after being elevated over and above the designated rank for such deployment.
“He therefore firmly directs that henceforth officers posted to executive governors as aide-de-camp (ADC) should not be above the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). COMPOLS (Commissioners of police) all states only, this is for your strict compliance. Treat as very important please.”
An Aide-De-Camp (ADC) is a senior police officer assigned to serve as a personal assistant and security detail to high-ranking officials, including state governors.
However, over time, some officers posted as ADCs have been promoted beyond the DSP rank but have continued to serve in their ADC capacity.
This situation may have created tensions within the police structure, as it raises concerns about favoritism, excessive influence of governors over police operations, and the potential undermining of discipline within the force.
By restricting ADC postings to officers of the DSP rank or lower, the police authorities may be aiming to prevent undue political influence, ensure that promotions do not disrupt assignments, and maintain operational discipline.
