The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) FCT Command has charged officers and men to respect and support Gender Based-Violence (GBV) victims.
The NSCDC FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu, gave the charge on Wednesday during the close of a 2-day workshop for senior officers at the command headquarters.
The theme of the workshop was “Gender: Transformative Approach”.
Odumosu said that the training had become imperative in view of the recurrent concerns emanating from GBV reports in the FCT.
“The purpose of the workshop is to enhance the effectiveness of our personnel as gender based violence has become a critical issue that affects communities where we live and operate from.
“And because you play vital roles in preventing, responding and addressing cases of GBV, be mindful of your actions and decisions, as it may impact directly or indirectly on the safety, dignity and wellbeing of survivors or victims.
“With this training, be rest assured that in no distant time, you will become rallying points, a beacon of knowledge and excellence that will be a source of inspiration and help to others,” he said.
Odumosu urged area commanders and division heads to serve as agents of change by educating both officers and complainants of the dangers of GBV and the need for a violence-free society.
“I urge participants, drawn from all the area councils in the FCT, to challenge harmful gender norms and promote a more equitable society for all,” he said.
The commandant called on residents to support government’s efforts in eradicating the scourge by saying “No to GBV”.
He further advised citizens to report any known cases to the right authority before it leads to severe injuries or death of victims.
