The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ondo State Command, says fauly wipers, lighting system and bad brakes could cause crashes, especially during the rainy season.
Dr Samuel Ibitoye, FRSC State Sector Commander, said this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Akure on Wednesday.
Ibitoye said that inadequate maintenance of vehicle components could cause serious fatalities for the driver, passengers and other road users.
According to him, rainy season demands special driving skills and special use of highways.
“As the rain has started, it behoves on us to ensure that our vehicle conditions are perfect before embarking on any journey.
“If the vehicle components are not good, it becomes a problem and affects vehicle performance, which could cause serious crashes on the highway.
“Drivers, especially, must ensure that their vehicle lighting system are okay, the wipers are working well, the mirror is intact and the brake system is perfect,” he said.
The FRSC commander, however, said that the command had engaged in public enlightenment and advocacy to ensure zero crashes during the rainy season.
Ibitoye also said that FRSC personnel would be constantly on the road to caution motorists, while the command would also engage in free vehicle safety checks to avoid unnecessary crashes.
“So, what we are saying is that people should do the needful. They should not overspeed, they should not drive dangerously, and should care for their vehicles.
“And for those young people who are 18 years and above, they should not allow their youthful exuberance to dictate how they drive on roads.
“They should observe the traffic rules and regulations, and should not engage in any driving competitions because their actions and inactions could result in damages,” Ibitoye said.
He, therefore, called on the personnel to be more committed, professional, and dedicated to their job by ensuring people drive to stay alive
