Illegal Mining: Stop Blackmailing Nigerian military, police, GPMI warns mischief makers

By Augustine Aminu

Global Peace Movement International (GPMI) has cautioned against the spread of misinformation about the Nigerian military and police, following claims that their personnel provide security for illegal miners in the country.

GPMI President General, Dr Mike Uyi gave the warning on Friday in a press statement amidst a public hearing convened by the House of Representatives Committee on Mineral Resources, chaired by Rep. Jonathan Gaza.

Dr. Mike Uyi clarified that the organization does not intend to engage in disputes with anyone, but seeks to correct the record.

He emphasized that allegations about military and police involvement in illegal mining activities are unfounded and unfair.

He said, “The claim of military and police protecting illegal miners in Nigeria is completely devoid of truth.

“It is most unfair for anyone to sponsor a smear campaign against the Nigerian military and police for whatever reason”.

He said, the military and police under the leadership of both the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa and Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun (IGP) have battled activities of illegal miners and deserve to be commended instead of being distracted and blackmailed.

He said, “The swift action taken by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to crack down on illegal mining activities is highly commendable.

“Their efforts to protect the country’s natural resources and ensure the safety of citizens are truly appreciated. The joint operation by the military and police has successfully dismantled illegal mining sites and brought perpetrators to justice.

“This decisive actions send a strong message that illegal activities will not be tolerated. The CDS and IGP have demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment to the nation’s security and well-being. Their efforts have made a significant impact and are a testament to the effectiveness of interagency collaboration. We at GPMI urge them to keep up the great work”

He cautioned that Nigerians would not stand idly and watch anyone sabotage the efforts being made by the security agencies by peddling misinformation, warning those behind such fake news to desist from doing so.
