IGP orders thorough investigation into police funding scandal

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has ordered an immediate investigation into a controversial article alleging corruption within the Nigeria Police Force.

The piece, published by Ecos Intelligence, claimed that Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) receive a mere N15,000 for three months, prompting serious concerns about funding and operational integrity.

In response, the Nigeria Police Force vehemently denied the allegations, labelling the article as “fake, misleading, and inaccurate.”

They asserted that DPOs receive statutory funding from federal allocations, supplemented by state government support, contrary to claims that they rely solely on unofficial funding sources for operations.

Acknowledging that funding has been a longstanding challenge, the police emphasized recent improvements in their financial situation and their commitment to transparency and accountability.

Part of the statement signed by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force PRO, read: “While we acknowledge that inadequate funding has long been a challenge for the police, the current government has demonstrated commitment to increasing funding to enhance operations and improve policing capabilities and overall effectiveness. The funding situation, in recent times, has begun to show notable improvement with promising prospects for further enhancement in the upcoming year.

“The Nigeria Police Force hereby reiterates its commitment to the principle of transparency in the course of discharging its duties and warns mischief makers to desist from attempts to detract and malign its progress, as the Force will not permit malicious individuals to continue to disparage the institution or slander its dedicated officers who toil day and night to secure our nation.”
