FRSC cautions motorists on speeding to reduce crashes

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Command in Ogun, has urged motorists to avoid speeding in order to reduce crashes along the highways.

Mr Fasakin Akinwumi, the FRSC Sector Commander in Ogun, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday.

Akinwumi also urged motorists to ensure adequate rest before embarking on journeys in the interest of their lives and that of others.

The FRSC official spoke in reaction to an accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday that claimed nine lives and injured three persons.

He said that the accident could have been averted if the driver of the Toyota Hiace Bus had adhered to the average speed limit.

“We can no longer tolerate this needless deaths that are caused by avoidable accidents. Some drivers are simply reckless.

“We urge motorists to desist from speeding, and endeavour to take adequate rest to prevent fatigue that can lead to accidents and unnecessary deaths,” he said.

Akinwumi also told drivers to obey traffic rules, shun alcoholic drinks, and avoid overloading to reduce road accidents.

He said that the FRSC would embark on aggressive enforcement of speed limit device in the state, and that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted.

It would be recalled that nine persons died while three others sustained various degrees of injuries in a road accident that occurred at the Ayetoro axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday.

The crash involved a stationary articulated vehicle and a bus, carrying 13 persons comprising 10 men and three women.
