In a bid to strengthen Nigeria’s security framework, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), in collaboration with Search for Common Ground, has organized a five-day capacity-building training for Principal Staff Officers on the “Common Ground Approach and Early Warning and Early Response to Conflict.”
According to a statement by CSC Babawale Afolabi, National Public Relations Officer, NSCDC Headquarters Abuja, the training, held at Sandralia Hotel, Abuja, was designed to equip participants with strategic tools and insights necessary to tackle contemporary security challenges.
Declaring the training open, NSCDC Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, mni, OFR, emphasized that continuous training and development are crucial for achieving effective security operations. He highlighted that discipline and professionalism stem from regular training programs, which have played a key role in enhancing the Corps’ operational efficiency.
Dr. Audi traced the roots of Nigeria’s insurgency crisis back to 2007, lamenting how what began as a localized issue has escalated into widespread insecurity, including banditry, kidnapping, and militancy. He stressed the urgent need for improved synergy among security agencies, noting that no single agency can singlehandedly combat the nation’s security challenges.
“One thing that is constant with the present reality is that no particular security agency can claim a holistic strategy for tackling insurgency. This is the time to enhance synergy among security agencies in the country,” he stated.
He further commended the growing inter-agency collaboration, emphasizing the three pillars of security cooperation—Collaboration, Coordination, and Cooperation—which have begun yielding positive results.
In her welcome address, Fatimah Abubakar, Country Director of Search for Common Ground, represented by Director of Programmes, Miss Gift Owonipa, praised the sacrifices of NSCDC and other security agencies in protecting Nigerians. She noted that the training is a significant step toward fostering a proactive security approach, aimed at ensuring early conflict detection and response mechanisms.
“Nigeria continues to grapple with a myriad of security threats, including intercommunal clashes, insurgency, banditry, militancy, and cultism. This training represents a significant step towards empowering participants with early warning and response systems to foster a more peaceful and stable Nigeria,” she stated.
Search for Common Ground is an international non-governmental organization (NGO) committed to ending violent conflict and building peaceful and just societies. Established in 1982, the organization has headquarters in Washington, D.C., USA, and Brussels, Belgium.
