Human rights group, Youth Rights Campaign (YRC), has lambasted the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as the female activist Abiodun Olamide detained “for insulting” President Bola Tinubu’s son, Seyi, and criticising police excesses spent Christmas Day in detention.
The YRC in a statement issued by its National Secretary, Francis Nwapa, demanded the immediate release of Thomas, noting that her birthday is December 25.
According to the organisation, her latest birthday was unfortunately spent in detention.
In the statement he posted on his social media account on Wednesday, Nwapa said, “Today was supposed to be a joyous celebration of life for Nurse Abiodun Thomas, but @officialABAT, IG @PoliceNG Kayode Egbedukun & @Princemoye1 ensured she’s in prison on her birthday.”
Nwapa noted, “A country where citizens are incarcerated for the pleasure of those assumed powerful is nothing but a slave camp, its captors should expect an imminent Revolution any time soon.
“We at YRC celebrate the courage of Nurse Abiodun Thomas and Demand her immediate & unconditional release. Happy birthday to you Nurse Abiodun Thomas.”
Also, human rights lawyer, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, described Thomas’ incarceration by the police as a brazen act of abuse of power and civic intimidation.
He said the idea that Thomas is intimidating the president’s son is nonsense.
Odinkalu posted on his X account on Tuesday, “Today is the #birthday of Ms. Olamide Thomas.
“Her incarceration is a brazen act of #AbuseOfPower & civic intimidation.
“The idea that this poor woman is #CyberBullying or intimidating the powerful son of a powerful president is transparent nonsense.”
