Mr Ope Fatinikun, Assistant Controller General of Corrections (ACG) Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) Zone A, on Monday warned officers against indiscipline in the service.
He charged them to be professional in their conduct and diligent.
Fatinikun, who is in charge of Lagos and Ogun States, spoke during an unscheduled visit to Abeokuta Custodial Centres.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the ACG, who recently assumed duty, visited the Minimum Correctional Centre at Ibara and Medium Security Custodial Centre at Oba, both in Abeokuta.
The visit was part of his supervisory strategies to determine the level of alertness and check indecent dressing among officers in the area.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service, as you know, has zero tolerance for indiscipline and unprofessional conduct.
“NCoS manages both custodial and non custodial centres, so officers must be diligent and committed to the service.
“Any act of indiscipline, disloyalty to the Service, and insubordination will be decisively dealt with,” he said.
The ACG inspected all the departments in both centres and subsequently directed that inmates must be given adequate attention, especially while in transit to courts.
He warned officers against aiding and allowing usage of phones among the inmates.
“Any officer caught engaging in any form of trafficking for inmates will be sanctioned and severely dealt with,” he said.
The ACG urged the inmates to be of good conduct and not to get involved in any form of violence or jail break.
He commended Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, for the prompt payment of salaries and promotion arrears of Correctional Service officers.
