Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, the Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has raised concerns over the continued detention of one Chukwu Sunday Obasi, who has been held by the Department of State Services (DSS) since March 2021 without trial.
Ejimakor stated that Obasi who was arrested for condemning persistent herdsmen attacks in the South-East, has been detained by DSS without access to lawyers and his family.
Ejimakor revealed that efforts by lawyers to secure Obasi’s release or access to due process have been unsuccessful.
“Chukwu Sunday Obasi has been detained by DSS since March 2021 without trial. Efforts by lawyers have proved futile,” Ejimakor stated.
According to him, Obasi’s arrest was based on allegations of being a member of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a claim he believes is unfounded.
“They accused him of being an IPOB member just because he was condemning the Fulani herdsmen attacks in Igboland,” he said.
Ejimakor called on the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government to intervene and ensure the release of Obasi, describing his detention as part of a broader crackdown on Igbos who speak out against insecurity in the South-East.
“The Federal Government should direct its security agencies to halt this persecution of Igbos who are perceived to be fighting for justice for Ndigbo. Free him, now!” he demanded.
