Police arrest 11 suspects over alleged breach of public peace in Niger

The Police Command in Niger has arrested 11 suspects over alleged thuggery and breach of public peace at Chaichainiya area of Kaduna Road in Suleja.

SP Wasiu Abiodun, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, said this in a statement made available to newsmen,  on Sunday in Minna.

Abiodun said that the arrest followed report it received on March 6, at about 11:00p.m. that youths and some secondary school students were fighting at Chaichainiya.

The command’s spokesman said that investigations revealed that the ugly incident started between two boys, including one Umar Idris, fighting for the attention of girl.

“It was reported that during the incident, gunshots were heard from different directions which hit two victims on their laps, one Nura and Imrana, both 10 and 11 years of age, respectively.

“However, during the police covert operation, 11 suspects including the said Idris were arrested and under investigation.

“A preliminary investigation revealed that a personnel of a sister security agency was responsible for the shooting that led to the gunshot injuries of the two victims,” he said.

Abiodun said that investigation was ongoing and further information would be made available to the public.
