Police arraign man, 33, for allegedly disposing waste materials unlawfully

The police, on Friday brought a 33-year-old man, Bamisaye Adeniyi, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly disposing waste materials unlawfully.

The defendant who is of no fixed address, is standing trial on a two-count charge of unlawful waste disposal and assault.

The prosecutor, Insp Olasunkanmi Bamikole, told the court that the defendant and one other at large committed the offences on Jan. 22, at about 11:l.00 a.m. in Ado-Ekiti.

He alleged that the defendant and one other at large disposed waste materials in a manner that would cause significant risk to the environment.

Bamikole also alleged that the defendant assaulted and obstructed the Ekiti State Waste Environmental officers from discharging their lawful duty.

According to him, the offences contravene Section 29(a) (b) (c) of the Ekiti State Waste Management Authority Law, 2020 and Section 187(b) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

The prosecutor asked the court for adjournment to enable him study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.

Counsel to the defendant, Mr O.T Basanwo, urged the court to grant the defendant bail with a promise that he would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Adefunke Anoma, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

She adjourned the case until Feb. 20 for hearing.
