The Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP) on Monday conferred Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno with Distinguished Fellow Award.
The Investiture was performed by Mr Nathaniel Awuapila, the President of SPSP, with the support of Prof. Isaac Albert, SPSP founder ,at the governor’s office in Maiduguri.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the award was in recognition of the governor’s outstanding achievements in the promotion of peace amid insecurity in the state.
Earlier, Albert said that the fellowship, which he described as SPSP”s highest honour ,was conferred on the governor in July 2024 .
He ,however, said because of Zulum’s absence during the society’s annual conference, the initial occasion planned for the investiture, the leadership of SPSP decided to perform it at his convenience.
Albert restated the society’s commitment to strengthening the capacity of Borno indigenes towards the promotion of sustainable peace and development.
Also speaking, Awuapila said that the society was looking for an opportunity to establish a branch of SPSP in Maiduguri ,with the hope that the branch would be the best branch in the country.
“Your Excellency, we speak on behalf of the SPSP, to say that around the Sahel, you are a model in post- conflict reconstruction.
“A model in managing post conflict society. A model in peace building and development. These are the qualities that we have seen demonstrated as we observed the things that have happened in the state over the years and even in the area of infrastructural development.
“The society has decided to commission a study in your honour. We have done a few in the past, very well- intentioned and this is certainly not going to be less of such study to see how your contributions have made impacts, and could become a model for people to study around the Sahel and indeed, globally.
In his remarks, Zulum expressed gratitude to SPSP Board of Trustees and its leadership for founding him worthy of the Fellowship.
“I want to assure you that this administration will link up with the society and then see how possible best we can bring tremendous success to the North-East region as well as to the country generally in terms of addressing crises in Nigeria.
“This can be done not only through kinetic measures. The non-kinetic measures are very essential tools in addressing insurgency.
“Here in Borno State what we are doing is non- kinetic measures. We have decided to put more efforts in addressing the socio-economic and political dimension of the crisis ,which is a non-kinetic measure ,and it has been yielding results so far.
“Within the last two and half years, we have received over 200,000 repentant Boko Haram members, which is a clear indication that the non-kinetic measures are working for us,” he said.
The governor also commended the society for recognising his achievements in peace building, especially his administration’s recovery efforts toward ensuring the peaceful process of survivors’ resettlement in their respective communities.
Zulum also expressed appreciation to the teeming national and international partners for their contributions in promoting peace and development in Borno,
