Former Governor of Edo, Sen. Adams Oshiomhole has lauded the Federal Government for increasing the feeding allowance for inmates at the Nigerian correctional centres by 50 per cent.
Oshiomhole, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Interior, said on Monday in Benin the action would address one of the major concerns of the committee.
He said , in a statement, that the committee’s concerns had been the welfare and rehabilitation of inmates in correctional facilities nationwide.
The former governor said “a well-fed inmate is more receptive to rehabilitation and reintegration into society.”
Oshiomhole, who is representing Edo North Senatorial District at the National Assembly, said “this increase in feeding allowance will significantly impact the lives of inmates, enabling them to maintain good health and focus on their correctional programme.
“Wth proper feeding and care, inmates will be more likely to participate in vocational training, counseling, and other rehabilitation programme, ultimately becoming better humans and reducing recidivism rates.
“This increase is a significant step towards improving the conditions in correctional facilities and supporting the rehabilitation of inmates.”
