The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ebonyi State has vowed to ensure enforcement of the law against the abuse of the Nigerian currency.
The corps described the Naira as a critical national asset that deserved to be protected and honoured.
Mr Francis Nnadi, commandant of NSCDC in Ebonyi said this during a courtesy call to the Controller of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Ebonyi office, on Thursday in Abakaliki.
Nnadi said that the corps would effectively enforce the law and ensure that those who contravened the law were brought to justice.
He warned Ebonyi indigenes especially the ‘high and mighty’ in society to shun currency abuse and report anyone found engaging in the act.
Nnadi, who called for closer tie with the CBN to enhance seamless implementation of the law in Ebonyi, noted that safeguarding the Naira from all forms of abuse was a civic responsibility of every citizen.
“We must come together to protect our national currency which is our pride as a people; so, as a security agency with mandate to protect critical national assets and infrastructure, z. NI call for partnership with the nation’s apex bank to achieve this.
“The rate of abuse of the Naira is very rampart and alarming these days especially by those who sell mints and those who spray them at social events, this needs to stop,” Nnadi said.
The NSCDC boss explained that his visit was predicated on the need to strengthen ties with the apex bank and enhance mutual cooperation, since Corps was saddled with the mandate of protecting critical national assets and infrastructure.
“Ebonyi is classified as one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria but pockets of insecurity lies underneath the surface,” he added.
He pointed out that kidnapping has become a threat in the South-East thereby making everyone a potential victim.
He said that the corps has upscaled the capacity and efficiency of its personnel to meet the present security challenges in the state.
The commandant further offered some security tips to members of staff of CBN and promised to provide the bank’s personnel further security tips on regular basis.
He added that the visit was aimed to consolidate on the existing synergy between the two organisations for more robust working relationship especially in the areas of combating cyber crimes.
Responding, the CBN Controller, Mr Daniel Ogboogu, thanked the commandant for the visit and promised to partner the corps to ensure effective enforcement of the law against currency abuse and cyber crimes in the state.
Ogboogu who addressed the issues of tariff rate in automated teller machine (ATM) by commercial banks, said that the director of currency in the headquarters was on top of the situation.
The controller also expressed the desire to have NSCDC to join in safeguarding the bank’s premises and infrastructure.
“It is our desire to have officers of NSCDC to be part of security team safeguarding our premises, but that can only be possible with the express approval of the headquarters,” he said
