In a well-coordinated operation, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals successfully raided several illegal mining and sand dredging sites in Akwa Ibom, arresting six individuals in connection with these illicit activities.
The illegal mining operations have resulted in significant revenue loss for the Federal Government, environmental degradation, and serious health risks to local communities.
The operation, code-named Operation Hayakin Kogo, is part of the NSCDC’s nationwide effort to combat illegal mining, enforce compliance with mining regulations, and protect the country’s mining sites from unlawful encroachments.
The Commandant General of the NSCDC, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, emphasized the agency’s commitment to protecting critical national assets, particularly in the solid minerals sector, which plays a vital role in Nigeria’s economy.
The Mining Marshals’ Commander, ACC Attah John Onoja, issued a stern warning to those involved in illegal mining, urging them to desist or face full weight of the law. He advised individuals seeking to operate legally to approach the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development and the Mining Cadastre Office for proper regularization, as the operation will continue to enforce full compliance with mining laws and regulations for the benefit of Nigeria and Nigerians.
