Chief of Defence Civil-Military Relations, Rear Adm. Olusanya Bankole, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to upholding the principles and integrity of civil-military relations in its areas of operation.
Bankole said this during the medical rhapsody organised by the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT on Tuesday in Lagos.
The outreach held at Operation AWATSE Camp in Majidun, Ikorodu, Lagos State, aims to provide healthcare relief to residents of Majidun community, Ikorodu.
Bankole noted that the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, remained committed to ensuring that civil-military relations projects had a tangible impact in areas of operation.
“The Defence Headquarters oversees about eight theatres of operation, and the maritime component of Operation AWATSE is one of them,” Bankole said.
Operation AWATSE, which covers Lagos, Ogun, and parts of Ondo State, is primarily tasked with monitoring pipelines and tackling criminal activities.
Bankole, however, noted that the military also “engages in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, such as the medical outreach.
“Through this initiative, we provide medical support, including mosquito nets, medications, and routine health tests,” he added.
He urged residents to view the military as part of their community, highlighting that many service members had ties to the area.
“There has been a misconception that military personnel harass civilians, but this is incorrect.
“We are here to protect you, and our salaries come from the taxes you pay.
“The CDS is committed to sustaining peace across all theatres of operation, including Maiduguri, Port Harcourt, and Kebbi,” Bankole said.
Bankole explained that the outreach was not just about healthcare but also about fostering trust and collaboration between the military and the local population.
“Beyond medical support, we want residents to feel comfortable engaging with us and to provide necessary information about any suspicious activities in their community,” he said.
He noted that the medical rhapsody was part of the Nigerian military’s broader efforts to enhance civil-military relations and ensure the well-being of communities within its operational areas
Mr Suleiman Olarenwaju, Chairman of Ikorodu West Local Council Development Area (LCDA), praised the Nigerian Navy for its commitment to community welfare.
“The presence of the military in Majidun and Ishawo has significantly improved security in Ikorodu, especially in areas previously known for criminal activities,” he noted.
Similarly, Chief Alex Omoleye, the Baale of Majidun, acknowledged the Nigerian Navy’s ongoing support and urged them to continue their efforts in maintaining peace and security.
“We have benefited from the Navy’s support over the years, and we hope they will not relent in fighting crime and promoting peace in our community,” Omoleye said.
One of the beneficiaries, Mr Kunle Egbigbemi, expressed gratitude to the Navy for prioritising health and security in the community.
“We truly appreciate their efforts in keeping us safe and ensuring our health is well taken care of. May God continue to strengthen and empower them,” he said.
