The National Defence College (NDC) Nigeria regrets to announce the passing of Navy Captain Sokodobo Ahmadu, a distinguished member of National Defence College Course 33. The late senior officer was laid to rest in a solemn ceremony attended by the Commandant of NDC, Rear Admiral Olumuyiwa Olotu, alongside the Deputy Commandant, College Secretary, Directors, faculty members, participants, colleagues, and staff of the NDC. His family and loved ones were also present to bid him farewell.
According to Commander M.T. Muhammad, the Public Relations Officer of the National Defence College, the Commandant, Rear Admiral Olotu, extolled the virtues of the late Navy Captain, describing him as a professional, dedicated, and disciplined officer whose contributions to the Nigerian Navy and the nation’s defence architecture will be greatly missed. He extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved family, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul and for God’s grace upon his loved ones.
Born on 4 June 1978 in Gwagwalada, Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Navy Captain Ahmadu’s educational and professional journey was marked by excellence. He attended Model Federal College of Technology Primary School and Federal Government College Minna before gaining admission into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Kaduna as a member of the 49 Regular Course. He graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Civil Engineering and was commissioned into the Nigerian Navy as a Logistics Officer specializing in project management.
He further pursued academic excellence, earning a Postgraduate Certificate in Public Accounting from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, a Master’s degree in International Affairs and Defence Studies from NDA, and a Master’s in Engineering (MEng) in Geotechnics, with a PhD in view, also from NDA.
His professional military training included the Sub-Technical Course at NNS QUORRA, Basic Logistics Course at Nigerian Navy Finance and Logistics College OWERRINTA, Junior Staff Course at Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Senior Staff Course at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC) Jaji, and the Naval Warfare Course at the Naval War College Nigeria (NWCN).
Throughout his career, Navy Captain Ahmadu held various strategic positions, including Watchkeeping Officer on board NNS AYAM and NNS NWAMBA, Base Project Officer at NNS VICTORY, Staff Officer Civil Engineering at Project Implementation Monitoring and Evaluation Directorate, Naval Headquarters, Command Project Officer at Headquarters Naval Training Command, General Manager Civil Works at Naval Building and Construction Company Limited, and Assistant Director of Architecture at Defence Headquarters. He also served as a Military Observer with the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).
The late Navy Captain Ahmadu is survived by his wife and three children. The high point of the burial ceremony was the presentation of flags to the family and the traditional gun salute in his honour.
