The new Commissioner of Police (CP) in Oyo State, Mr Johnson Adenola, has pledged to work tirelessly to reduce crime in the state.
Adenola made this pledge during his inaugural media briefing at the Command’s Headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, on Thursday.
He acknowledged the significant challenges faced by Oyo State, one of the most populous in Africa, but expressed his excitement about the opportunity to serve its people.
“I am fully prepared to tackle the tasks ahead,” he said, saying that under his leadership, the command remained unwavering in its commitment to protecting lives and property.
He also pledged to uphold the principles of fairness, impartiality, and respect for diversity.
“We will work tirelessly to drastically reduce crime rates in the state, in line with the directives of the Inspector-General(IG) of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, ensuring that residents live without fear and their safety and security are guaranteed.”
Adenola drew on his vast experience, particularly his tenure as a Staff Officer at the Force Headquarters.
He added that his recent role in the IG’s Secretariat, where he gained deep insight into the unique security challenges facing various parts of the country, including Oyo state, was an added advantage.
“These challenges include kidnapping, armed robbery, herders/farmers clashes, illegal mining, chieftaincy disputes, land grabbing, and cult-related violence,” he said.
He assured the people of Oyo state that the police under his leadership would adopt a zero-tolerance approach to criminal activities.
According to him, the command will proactively identify, isolate, and bring to justice those who threaten the state’s peace and security.
Adenola also called for the support and cooperation of the public to effectively discharge his duties.
He acknowledged the valuable contributions of his predecessor, CP Ayodele Sonubi, for laying a solid foundation for operations in the state.
“I am committed to building upon this legacy,” Adenola said.
The CP promised to ensure discipline at all levels of policing, strict adherence to the rule of law and citizens’ rights, and the adoption of intelligence-led, technology-driven policing methods.
Adenola expressed gratitude to the IG for appointing him to serve in Oyo State and commended Gov. Seyi Makinde for providing a conducive environment for policing operations.
