NAF defends “decisive” airstrike in Zamfara, says it’ll investigate alleged Vigilante casualties

Nigerian Air Force, NAF, has robustly defended the success of its recent “decisive” airstrikes in Tungar Kara, Zurmi Local Government Area, Zamfara State, which it claims dealt a heavy blow to bandits terrorizing local villages.

However, the operation has raised concerns after reports emerged of possible casualties among vigilantes who were reportedly caught in the crossfire.

In a statement issued late on Sunday night, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, Director of Public Relations and Information for the NAF, affirmed that the strike had achieved its primary objective—neutralizing several bandits and rescuing kidnap victims. “Our mission was successful in eliminating multiple bandits and rescuing innocent civilians from captivity,” Akinboyewa stated. “We remain committed to restoring peace in the region,” he added.

Despite this success, Akinboyewa acknowledged the gravity of reports alleging the deaths of vigilantes who had been working alongside security forces to combat banditry. “We have received disturbing reports suggesting that some members of local vigilante groups may have been inadvertently affected during the operation,” he said. “As a responsible and professional force, we are investigating these reports thoroughly to determine the truth”.

Akinboyewa reassured the public that the NAF places the utmost importance on protecting all lives, including those of civilians and vigilantes. “The loss of any life, whether civilian or allied personnel, is deeply concerning,” he emphasized. “We take these allegations seriously, and an investigation is ongoing to verify the details. We will make the findings public once the facts have been fully established,” he added.

While the NAF’s mission continues to focus on countering banditry and restoring security in the North West, the force underscored that the well-being of all Nigerians remains its highest priority. “Our commitment to the safety and security of the people of Nigeria remains unwavering,” Akinboyewa said. “We will continue to work closely with all relevant authorities to address these concerns and ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future”.
