Gov. Alex Otti of Abia has highlighted the critical role of intelligence gathering in curbing insecurity across the country.
Otti made this known on Friday during the visit of the Course 47 of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of the state.
The governor noted that the effective use of intelligence would enable security agencies to prevent criminal activities before they occur.
“A lot of times, if you pay attention to intelligence, you are able to nip in the bud majority of the cases before they happen.
“So, you pay attention to intelligence, it’s good that, this is what this course is about too.
“We have also held a strong view that security starts from intelligence; because thorough and well put together intelligence would always predict and sometimes put the other forces in a state of readiness,” Otti said.
He described as noteworthy the fact that Nigeria continues to receive foreign military students for training, adding that this reflects international confidence in the country’s military institutions.
Otti lauded the discipline and cooperation of military personnel in Abia, highlighting their collaboration with his administration in eradicating crime and maintaining security.
He congratulated the students and expressed gratitude to the leadership of the Command and Staff College for choosing Abia for their study tour.
Otti reaffirmed his government’s commitment to partnering with security agencies to sustain peace in the state.
Earlier, the Deputy Commandant of the college, Rear Admiral Aniefok Uko, explained that the visit to Abia formed part of the Senior Course curriculum.
Uko, who is also the Director of Studies of the college, said that the course was titled “Environmental Study Tour” with the theme “Harnessing Grassroots Intelligence for Enhanced Internal Security”.
He said the tour was designed to allow students to gain practical exposure and consolidate the theoretical knowledge acquired at the college.
“So the students are here in Abia State to look at how Abia is. Is there structure towards which these people can be galvanised, towards assisting the government and also the security agencies with veritable intelligence.
“If there’s a practice here that we can adopt, we will adopt as the best practice and they will take it back to wherever they serve, all with a view to ensuring that national security is enhanced in Nigeria,” Uko said.
He thanked the governor for hosting Course 47 and acknowledged the arrangements and logistics provided to ensure their comfort during their stay in Abia
