Group warns against causing disaffection between milit

Unity Advocacy Group (UAG), a Non-governmental Organisation (NGO), has warned mischief makers to stop causing disaffection between the Armed Forces and the civil populace.

The Convener of UAG, Mr Ifeanyi Aigbedion, gave the warning at a news conference on Tuesday in Abuja.

Aigbedion said the call was in response to the recent circulation of an old video depicting a soldier molesting a civilian for wearing a Nigerian Army Desert Camouflage uniform.

He said the release of such video was intended to cause disaffection between the military and civilians.

The convener said that mischief makers had been looking for various avenues to bring the military at loggerheads with civilians without success.

According to him, those behind the recycling of the old video don’t wish the country well, especially in a period the country is going through challenges.

“Nigerians are aware of the various measures by the Armed forces of Nigeria to bring peace and stability to our country.

“UAG is very sure that if the video is true at all, the personnel responsible would have been dealt with.

“This is because the military under the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa had continued to exhibit a high level of discipline.

“While we do not support undue manhandling of civilians, we advise against unauthourised use of military camouflage.

“We support the ban on the unauthourised use of military camouflage, especially when the country is facing security challenges,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Nigerian Army had on Sunday, reaffirmed that the ban on the unauthourised use of military camouflage remained in full effect.

The Director of Army Public Relations, Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, in a statement said the video footage was a stale audio-visual.

According to him, the footage was being circulated by individuals with malicious intent to create tension between the military and the civilian populace.
