Group calls for overhaul of Police Command in Anambra to tackle insecurity

The Recover Nigeria Project, a civil society organisation, has called for the total overhaul of the Police Command in Anambra to ensure optimal security of residents.

Mr Osita Obi, the Convener of the group, made the call at a news conference on Friday in Awka.

Obi said the overhaul would ensure that residents livde and moved about without the fear of being kidnapped, robbed, harassed and even murdered in any way.

“In view of the present security situation in Anambra state, Recover Nigeria project is calling for the overhaul of the police command in the state.

“Many police officers in the state have served more than 30 years and should be transfered. We believe the move will help to tackle kidnapping and other crimes, thereby restoring a safe and liveable homeland,” he said.

He alleged complicity in the campaign against insecurity by some of the police personnel who have overstayed in the state.

The convener of the group also called for the immediate probe and sack of the former Commissioner of Police (CP) in Anambra, Nnaghe Obono-Itam, following the escape of two suspects in the murder of a lawmaker, Mr Justice Azuka.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the two suspects linked to the murder of Azuka, Labour Party (LP) lawmaker representing Onitsha-1 Constituency at the State Assembly, fled from police custody during an operation to apprehend other suspects.

He said: “It is sad that under Nnaghe Obono-Itam’s watch as the CP, insecurity was at its peak, two suspects linked to the death of a lawmaker, escaped from police custody.

“Residents lived under intense pressure and fear as kidnappers and armed robbers operated openly both during the day and at night.

“The former CP should be made to explain what happened and sacked for incompetence in handling security in the state,” he said.

Obi commended Gov. Chukwuma Soludo’s inauguration of “Agunaechemba”, a vigilante architecture to assist and complement the federal security forces especially the police in Anambra.
