A former Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mike Okiro has described late Chief Edwin Clark as a vocal and irrepressible Nigerian, known for speaking truth to power.
Okiro in a statement in Abuja on Thursday, noted that the late Ijaw leader and politician was a colossus in the country’s political landscape.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Clark, a former federal commissioner for information, died on Monday at the age of 97.
“Pa Edwin Clark has never failed to address any national issue that didn’t resonate with the interest of the common good. Indeed, his departure has left a huge vacuum.
“As mortals, we will miss you dearly but can only take solace that the Almighty God will grant you eternal life for having lived a remarkable life by touching humanity positively,” he stated.
Okiro stated that the late Niger Delta leader was a notable icon of the South-South, a defender of the Niger Delta and a Nigerian patriot of no mean repute.
“Heaven rejoices when the Godly answers a glorious home call. Adieu Pa Edwin Clerk and on behalf of my family, I extend sincere sympathies to the entire family, friends and the people of the South-South,’’ Okiro stated.
Clark worked with the administrations of the military governor Samuel Ogbemudia and head of state, Gen. Yakubu Gowon between 1966 and 1975.
