CAS inaugurates key welfare projects at NAF Ground Training Command, Enugu

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, has inaugurated several projects at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Ground Training Command (GTC) in Enugu, aimed at enhancing the welfare of personnel and their families.

Abubakar inaugurated the projects during his operational visit and project inauguration tour of the GTC on Thursday in Enugu.

Among the inaugurated projects were the remodelled and refurnished Senior Non-Commissioned Officers Mess at the NAF Base, Abakpa, and the renovated gymnasium at GTC, Emene.

The CAS also inspected ongoing projects, including the construction of a hangar for the Helicopter Combat Training Group and a dual 2 x 30 transit accommodation for officers at the GTC.

Other facilities inspected by the CAS included the Medical Reception Station, a water treatment plant, and various infrastructure within the NAF Base, Abakpa.

The CAS, whose command Philosophy is anchored on “Maintaining a Highly Motivated Force by Enhancing Welfare and Infrastructural Renewal”, took at time to diligently know more on the completed and ongoing projects.

While he did not grant interviews to journalists, the CAS issued firm directives to NAF engineers, project officers, and contractors to maintain strict adherence to quality standards and project specifications.

In his welcome address, the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) Ground Training Command, Air Vice Marshal Ahmed Shinkafi, commended the CAS for his swift and impactful support since assuming office on Feb. 17, 2025.

“The CAS approved an immediate upgrade of our integrated water treatment facility and the procurement of a water tanker as a backup.

“These are efforts aimed at alleviating the perennial water scarcity in Enugu, which has significantly impacted personnel,” Shinkafi said.

“He also approved the upgrade of our Medical Reception Station in Abakpa to a Level 2 Hospital and the procurement of a new ambulance, as well as a 52-seater CNG-powered bus to ease troop transportation challenges.”

Shinkafi further revealed that plans were underway for the development of a new world-class, smart NAF Base in Gabon Village, Enugu, all of which had been initiated within just three months of his assumption of office.

“Welfare is indeed a morale booster. Over the last two years, the CAS has significantly enhanced the well-being of personnel, which in turn has increased motivation and improved service delivery,” he added.

The AOC expressed deep appreciation to the CAS for his unwavering support and approvals geared toward improving the welfare of personnel, their families, and NAF veterans in Enugu.

According to him, NAF personnel remained highly motivated by the provision of these welfare facilities, which also supported social interaction and fitness activities within the command
