Brig.-Gen. Unachukwu assumes command as new GOC 7 Division

Brig.-Gen. Unachukwu has officially assumed duty as the 15th General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division and Commander, Sector 1, Operation HADIN KAI.

The assumption of command followed a formal handover ceremony held on Thursday at the Division’s Headquarters in Maimalari Military Cantonment, Maiduguri.

Until his recent appointment, Unachukwu was the Commander 63 Brigade and Commander, Sector 1 South-South, Operation DELTA SAFE.

A seasoned and versatile senior officer, Unachukwu previously commanded the 21 Special Armoured Brigade in Bama, Borno State, where he was commended for his operational performance.

He takes over from Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Haruna, who has been redeployed as Director, Future Casting, at the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre.

Speaking at the ceremony, Haruna expressed gratitude to God for a successful tenure and thanked the officers and soldiers for their loyalty and commitment.

He described his successor as a capable and experienced officer with deep knowledge of the theatre and expressed confidence that Unachukwu would build on existing successes to tackle security challenges in the Area of Responsibility (AOR).

In his remarks, Unachukwu described his appointment as a rare privilege and thanked the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, for the confidence reposed in him.

He pledged to consolidate on the achievements of his predecessor and intensify efforts to ensure peace and stability in the region.

The event featured the signing of handover notes, decoration of the new GOC with the Division’s insignia, handing over of the command flag, and the ceremonial lowering and hoisting of flags to signify the change of leadership.

Other highlights included the outgoing GOC’s farewell address, a group photograph, and inspection of the quarter guard
