A’Ibom: Police detain 2 over alleged vandalism of transformer

The Police Command in Akwa Ibom has apprehended two persons over alleged vandalism of an electric transformer belonging to the Sure Foundation Polytechnic, Ikot Atai in Ukanafun area.

The Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, made the disclosure during his maiden press briefing at Ikot Akpanabia, Uyo, on Monday.

Azare said that the suspects drained the transformer oil valued N800,000, and took away armoured cables worth N3.5 million.

He said that during his first official visit to Gov. Umo Eno, the governor decried the rising cases of vandalism of public assets in the state.

“So we had to step up our efforts to nip the situation in the bud, and to arrest the perpetrators of the crime,” he said.

The police commissioner said that the stolen transformer, armoured cables and other items suspected to be charms were recovered from the suspects.

He said that the case would be charged to court after thorough investigations.

In a another development, Azare said that two other suspects were apprehended over alleged involvement in the kidnap of three persons on Jan. 10, at Ikpanya in Ibiono Local Government Area.

“The victims of the kidnap incident have been rescued by operatives of the command. They were rescued unhurt.

“We are working hard to apprehend the leader of the gang, criminals are warned to desist forthwith, the state won’t be safe for them anymore,” he said
