Rainstorms: NSCDC advise residents in Osun to be safety conscious

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Osun Command, has alerted residents  in the state on the need to be safety conscious with the advent of the rains, often accompanied with windstorms.

The warning is contained in a statement issued by Mr Igbalawole Sotiyo, the NSCDC Commandant in Osun, on Monday in Osogbo.

Sotiyo said that the warning was necessitated by the early morning rainstorm on Monday that destroyed electricity poles and damage houses and shops at Ilesa and Egbedore South LGA.

The commandant said that the damage evaluation done by his command in Ilesa East, showed that not less than six concrete poles fell on University Road in Ilesa.

“Similarly, in Egbedore South, at Aje market, Eesa Tuntun community, Ejemu Compound, and Ajetunmobi road in Ido-Osun, some electricity poles fell, and roofing sheets of houses and shops were also damaged,” he said

Sotiyo advised people in the state, to avoid walking or driving near the fallen electricity poles or power lines to avoid risk of electrocution.

He said that the electricity distribution company in the state had been contacted for further actions.

The commandant further said that the corps remain committed to ensuring public safety, particularly during emergencies and natural disasters.

“As we enter the rainy season, it is imperative that we take proactive measures to ensure our safety and the safety of those around us.

“We must be vigilant and take necessary precautions to avoid accidents and damages.

“I want to assure the good people of Osun State that, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) is committed to ensuring public safety, as one of the mandates of the corps is crisis management.

“We will continue to work tirelessly to respond to emergencies and protect members of the public from harm,” the Sotiyo said
