Batsari LG residents hail improved security situation

Some residents of Batsari Local Government Area, Katsina State, have praised security operatives and the government for their efforts in addressing the security challenges affecting the area.

The residents, who spoke with journalists in Batsari on Friday, expressed happiness, saying the situation that once caused them sleepless nights had improved significantly in recent times.

A community leader in Wagini village, Malam Yahuza Aminu, said the area previously suffered frequent bandit attacks, leading to loss of lives, abductions, and rustling of animals.

According to him, there was a time when no one in the community could sleep peacefully, as they lived in constant fear of unexpected attacks by bandits.

“Some of our people lost their lives, some were injured, and others were abducted. Many had to flee to neighbouring villages for safety,” he said.

He added that the security situation had recently improved, with no reports of abductions, killings, or animal rustling, unlike in the past.

“We have not heard gunshots from bandits in the last year. Our people now go about their daily activities freely, and markets are fully operational,” he said.

However, he noted that security challenges had not been completely eradicated, as occasional attacks still occurred in the eastern part of the community.

“But compared to a year ago, I can confidently say that insecurity has largely been brought under control in this area,” Aminu stated.

He also highlighted that improved security had led to a bumper harvest for farmers and increased school enrolment in the community.

According to him, many farmers who had abandoned their fields due to insecurity were able to return and earn millions of naira after harvesting their crops.

Chairman of the Shoe Sellers Association, Malam Jamilu Sani, recalled that in the past, attacks on traders were frequent, with hardly a week passing without incidents.

“But security has greatly improved. We now buy and sell without fear of attacks. We thank the security operatives and the government for this progress,” he said.

The same sentiment was shared by shop owners in Wagini and Batsari markets, who now conduct business without fear of attacks.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Batsari was one of the local government areas in the state most affected by insecurity
