The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has admonished all stakeholders to participate in road safety to reduce the rate of road crashes in the country.
Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) Alphonsus Godwin, Zonal Commanding Officer, Osogbo zonal command in charge of Oyo, Osun and Ondo States, made the call during a stakeholders’ town-hall meeting in Akungba-Akoko.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting, which was organised by FRSC in collaboration with the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), was held at the university hall.
The theme of the meeting “Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes Kill More Passengers Than Drivers”.
Godwin said that the stakeholders engagement was to sensitise motorists, the university community and others on the need to take proactive action whenever they were on the roads.
According to him, based on the theme, drivers needs to be proactive whenever they are traveling, especially passengers who should be active by cautioning and speaking up against reckless drivers.
“Going by this engagement, I want to call on all motorists to obey traffic rules and regulations.
“However, in event of any tanker spilling fuel, all the people around that vicinity should run for his or her life because nobody can predict the next outcome.
“As a university community, road safety business is everybody’s business because all of us, either directly or indirectly are involved in road safety.
“So, we want to solicit more collaboration by joining hands with the corps so that more life can be safe on the roads.
“If the roads are safe, the citizenry are safe, students are safe, the lecturers are safe,” he said.
Prof. Olugbenga Ige, AAUA Vice-Chancellor (VC), appreciated the corps for their initiative by bringing the stakeholders engagement to the university, saying FRSC services could not be neglected in the country.
Ige said that the university management would continue to support the corps to ensure that lives of people were protected.
“You are doing a lot in the society and country at large, what you are doing is a service to the humanity by preventing people from untimely death.
“So, we appreciate what you are doing in this country, we will continue to encourage you, because this kind of programme opens people’s eyes, as a driver you may not know everything.
“The theme is timely, and by calling people for workshops, orientations, lectures, it usually opens people’s mind for months and it will be refreshing their mind throughout the year.
“By this, I believe that the level of crashes will definitely go down,” he said.
NAN reports that Dr Samuel Ibitoye, FRSC State Sector Commander, delivered a lecture, while the Alale of Akungba was represented by High Chief Olajugba Olatunji, Olukusa of Okusa, at the meeting.
