The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service has urged residents of the territory to install fire routers in their homes, offices and organisations for safety.
The Public Relations Officer of the service, Mr Ibrahim Tauheed, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja.
A fire router is a device that is capable of reporting any emergency fire outbreak in a building once installed as it automatically sends signal to the service where the main device is domiciled for response.
Tauheed said that the device would assist the service to respond timely to cases of fire incidents.
“In the FCT-fire service right now, we have a device where all the residents of the FCT can connect with for real time intervention.
“But the connection is not only by mouth neither is it by intention, but by action and the action is for the residents to install the device in their respective homes, offices, malls among others.
“This device is automatic and once connected, it automatically sends a signal to the service main device domiciled at its headquarters in case of emergencies for prompt action.
“The signal will enable the service to alert its men at the nearest fire station and subsequently to the scene of the incident for prompt response,” Tauheed explained.
He added that aside from the new technology, the service had also embarked on an aggressive sensitisation campaign across the area councils, telling the residents what not to do, so as to avoid unnecessary fire outbreaks in their respective areas.
“We have been to communities, suburbs within the territory sensitising them on the importance of putting safety measures on ground to avoid fire outbreak.
“We have also enlightened them about the importance of installing the new technology (fire router) in their respective homes for their safety and the territory at large,” he added.
