3 dead as villagers, demolition squad clash in Kano

A clash between security personnel and residents of Rimin Zakara village in Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State has resulted to the deaths of three people.

The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, said this while addressing newsmen on Monday in Kano.

He said the incident occurred Sunday night during the demolition of illegal structures by a government team, which was resisted by the community.

The dispute revolved around a parcel of land claimed by Bayero University Kano which had requested government intervention to stop encroachment by the villagers.

There was confrontation between security personnel that accompanied the demolition team and the villagers as the team moved in to remove the structures.

The Commissioner said that three security personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) personnel were seriously injured and receiving treatment at a hospital.

He said told newsmen that the state government had announced plans to set up a high-powered committee to investigate the incident.
